MARIE LOUISE, EMPRESS OF FRANCE (1791-1847)
Autograph letter signed ('Louise') to the Countess of Beauvau, Basle, 3 May 1814, one page, small 8vo, integral blank, autograph envelope signed ('L'Imperatrice'), seal.
An affectionate letter on her departure from France after the abdication, regretting that she could not thank Madame de Beauvau earlier for a letter, or see her to express her gratitude for her services. 'J'en conserverai le souvenir toujours et je me flatte que vous voudrez aussi bien penser quelquefois a une personne qui a su si bien apprécier vos aimables qualités'. Written on the day on which Napoleon disembarked at Elba. Marie Louise, who had already been promised the Duchy of Parma, was briefly reunited with her father, the Emperor Francis I, at Rambouillet which she left on 23 April. She crossed into Switzerland on 2 May, on her way to Vienna.
Nathalie, Countess de Beauvau, her lady in waiting, was married to Napoleon's chamberlain.
