Lot Essay

Down Hall was bought by Matthew Prior in 1720. Among Prior's close circle of friends was the Royal landscape gardener Charles Bridgeman (d.1738) who laid out large parts of the grounds at Down Hall. Bridgeman's gardens were among the first 'Picturesque' landscapes.
