He was the eldest of a family which had, for many generations, been closely connected with the art of making iron. He followed family tradition by taking a graduate course in Mechanical Engineering at Loughborough College of Technology, graduating with a First Class Honours Degree. He served for a short time at the Appleby Frodingham steelworks under his father before moving to the National Gas and Oil Engine Co. where he rose rapidly to the position of Assistant Chief Engineer. During the Second World War he was seconded by the Ministry of Production to Loughborough College to teach Engineering and Design and Thermodynamics. He also served in the Home Guard, being a founder member of the Smallbore Rifle Association, training marksmen and commanding a platoon. After the war he continued to teach, first at Loughborough and later at Liverpool University. He then became the head of the department of Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineering at Darlington COllege of Technology and finally as Head of the Department of Mechanical, Production and Civil Engineering at the Harris College in Preston, whence he took early retirement in 1972. His retirement allowed him to return to his interest in Model Engineering which had started in the 1930s. Other hobbies included amateur radio, horology, and the ornamental turning of metal, wood and ivory. All the models he made during his retirement were also described and published in various specialist magazines, usually under his pen name of Tubal Cain. By the time of his death he had written and published over 200 articles and over 20 books. He was a regular exhibitor at the Model Engineering Exhibition from 1972, winning many medals and trophies culminating in a Gold Medal for his model of the Davey Domestic Motor. Other honours included election to the Worshipful Company of Turners in 1973 and in 1974 he was made a Freeman of the City of London.
