Lot Essay

Published by Duckworth in London, 1930, The Book of Beauty, Beaton was inspired by two volumes of Victorian beauties which he found on a visit to Canterbury in the summer of 1927. If he was not able to photograph likely candidates, he drew them instead. He also wrote pastiche accounts of the various beaties with help from Edith Olivier. When the book was published the first edition was immediately sold out.
