Enamelled depicting Jupiter holding a thunderbolt visiting Vulcan, god of fire, at his forge assisted by seven putti, and Venus arriving in her chariot on a large cloud, within a gilt scrolling floral band at the rim with details picked out in iron-red and en grisaille
8 7/8 in. (22.6 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A similar plate from the W. Martin-Hurst Collection is illustrated by G. C. Williamson, The Book of Famille Rose, London, 1927, plate XXXIX (bottom left); and also by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 318 and 319. A teapot and cover and teabowl and saucer with this design are in the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, exhibited Chinese Export Porcelain, Hong Kong, 30 November 1989 - 27 February 1990, no. 63. A saucer from the J. Louis Binder Collection was sold in these Rooms, 17 June 2003, lot 136; and a teabowl and saucer was also sold in these Rooms, 11 May 2004, lot 163.
