A PAIR OF MEISSEN BEAKERS AND COVERS
POSSIBLY 18TH CENTURY, GILT C. MARKS TO ALL PIECES
The beakers painted in the manner of B.G. Hauer with continuous harbour scenes with a quay, boats, merchants, camels, cargo and dilapidated buildings with towers, the foregrounds almost in silhouette, below borders of interlocking gilt scrolls and flowerheads, the bulbous octagonal lower parts richly gilt, each facet reserved with an ogival panel painted alternately in iron-red and purple with vignettes, above richly gilt waisted circular feet, the domed covers with similar gilt borders below octagonal gilt bands enclosing further vignettes flanking double-knop gilt finials, gilt band rims (areas of wear to gilding, one beaker with restored rim chip)

A turquoise-ground beaker of similar form, with similar arched panels painted alternately in iron-red and purple, is in the Cummer Gallery of Art, Jacksonville; see 'The Wark Collection, Early Meissen Porcelain' Catalogue (1984), p. 188, no. 370, and another, with purple camaïeu scenes within arches, is illustrated on p. 243, no. 584.
