Lot Essay

The distinctive lion-mask monopodia relate to those on a pair of mounted Sèvres porcelain vases in the Royal Collection ('Carlton House - The Past Glories of George IV's Palace', Exhibition Catalogue, London, 1991, no.1660). The Royal vases most closely relate to a design in the Sèvres archives entitled 'Vase Serpent Boizot.....fait pour monte par Monsieur Tomier du 4 Mars 1785'. It has been suggested on that basis, therefore, that the ormolu mounts on the Royal vases are by Pierre-Philippe Thomire.
