Lot Essay

This boiserie relates to the oeuvre of the highly talented partnership known as the Société pour les bâtiments du Roi and shows strong links with the drawings from the sketchbooks of the sculpteur ornemaniste Mathieu Legoupil (several leaves illustrated in B. Pons, De Paris à Versailles. 1699-1736, Strasbourg, 1986, p. 330 ff). It is particularly related to the oeuvre of a fellow sculpteur of Legoupil, Jacques Verberckt.
Interestingly, the present boiserie is close to that one from the hôtel Dodun now in the Green Boudoir of Waddesdon Manor which is also attributed to the workshops of the Société pour les bâtiments du Roi (B. Pons, Waddesdon Manor. Architecture and Panelling, Aylesbury, 1996).
