Lot Essay
Lowry visited Scotland in 1946 and 1947 and executed a series of drawings of Prince's Dock (see lot 127) which he later worked into a group of oil paintings.
The heavy machinery and ships bows were a new landscape which inspired him as much as the mills and factories, and provided a backdrop to his paintings which he peopled with the same small figures busily occupied with their daily lives.
The present work was the first painting by the artist to sell for £1,000 when it was first sold at auction in 1965.
