Lowry was a lifelong football fan and supporter of Bolton Wanderers. He had enjoyed playing as a boy and images of football matches and the attending crowds often feature in his work. Conservative in his appearance and views he didn't like rowdiness and vulgarity, preferring the genuine honesty of the game.

The present view was executed in 1930 and, unlike Lowry's composite views, depicts an exact location: the Recreation Ground, Holt Town. The site can be located very close to the centre of Manchester to the north of Ashton New Road, close to the new home of Manchester City Football Club.

Bishop Geoffrey Allen, the original owner of the drawing, went to Canton with his wife in 1935 to teach at the Union Theological College. One of their students was Miss Florence Li Tim-Oi. The Reverend Li Tim-Oi was to make history by becoming the first Anglican woman priest in 1944. The drawing has been gifted to the Li Tim-Oi Foundation and the proceeds of its sale will be used to fund the empowering of women working in communities where the challenges of HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, and even child sacrifice are prevalent.

The world record at auction for this artist's work is for a football painting, Going to the match, 1953, which sold for £1,926,500 in 1999 (Professional Football Association).
