The School of Recreation: or A guide to ... hunting, riding, racing, fireworks, military discipline, the science of defence, tennis, bowling, ringing, singing, cock-fighting, fowling and angling. London: A. Bettesworth and A. Wilde, 1736. 12mo., woodcut frontispiece, final advertisement leaf (title torn across and repaired on verso, G1 repaired at inner corner), early 20th-century morocco-backed marbled boards, top edge gilt, others uncut. Provenance: purchased from Davis and Orioli, London, 29 June 1937, for 4 gns.

The first edition of Howlett's pocket-size compendium of sports was published in 1684 and followed by a second in 1696. Five other editions including the present one appeared in the early 18th century. The section on tennis (pp. 77-78) compares it with 'Baloon', concluding with a seven stanza poem on "The Tennis-Court".
