Admiral The Hon. Charles Elphinstone Fleeming (1774-1840), second son of the 11th Lord Elphinstone took the name Fleeming when he inherited Cumbernauld House from his Fleeming grandmother, daughter of the Earl of Wigton. He served in Gibraltar as Commander-in-Chief and in 1816, at the age of forty-two, married Catalina Paulina Alessandro of Cadiz, aged 16, daughter of Louis Alessandro of Ancona, Italy and Antonia Felipes of Gibraltar. At the end of his career in the navy, Charles served as Governor of the Royal Naval Hospital in Greenwich, which was placed under great strain and treated its highest number of patients during the Napoleonic era.
