Osborne I, p.273: "[Dorothy Kilner] wrote her stories for her brother's children, who grew up around her. In the Guardian of Education, volume I, her friend Mrs. Trimmer describes [The Life and Perambulation of a Mouse] as 'one of the prettiest and most instructive books that can be found for very young readers ...'" The preface of vol. I of the Osborne copy is dated April 13, 1783; our copy is undated. However, the preface of vol. II of our copy is dated April 13, 1784, in accordance with Osborne. Auction records suggest there should be 46 illustrations but our copy collates complete with 45. It has been suggested that the illustrations are by John Bewick. (2)
