FIRST EDITION of former President Adams's lengthy eulogy of the 5th President, James Monroe. The review of his many-faceted public career was so long that it had to be abbreviated when delivered. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED in ink on the half-title: "Rev. Peter Whitney from J.Q. Adams." Adams had served as Secredtary of State under Monroe (1817-1825), and it was he who persuaded Monroe of the wisdom of proclaiming the unilateral "Monroe Doctrine," barring European intervention in the western hemisphere, in 1823.
