Lot Essay

The casket and scroll were presented to the Prince Henry during the ceremony held to commemorate Nairobi's 50th anniversary as capital of the colony. In recognition of this Prince Henry conveyed from the King a Royal Charter which granted Nairobi the status of a city. The charter ceremony was held on the 31 March 1950, the Prince's 50th birthday, a event which was marked by the crowd spontaneously singing 'Happy Birthday'.
