MARKHAM, Gervase (1568?-1637). Markhams Maister-Peece: containing all knowledge belonging to the Smith, Farrier, or Horse-Leech ... seventh impression. London: William Wilson, 1651. 2 parts, large 8° (178 x 132mm). Engraved frontispiece, one folding and 4 full-page woodcuts. (Slight loss to fore-margin of frontispiece, a few short tears and mostly marginal wormholes, occasional browning, a few leaves just shaved.) Contemporary blind-ruled sheep (rubbed, spine worn at foot, a few wormholes on lower cover). Provenance: John Tonge (1653 ownership inscription) -- Israel Tonge (1621-1680, 'Minister of Gods word in Dunquerque in Flanders', inscription) -- Other members of the Tonge family (signatures) -- Lord Ashburton (bookplate).
Seventh edition of Markham's immensely popular Maister-peece, first published in 1610. 'It has unique interest as the first veterinary manual in English to enjoy a reputation as the standard work on the subject, a position which it occupied for more then two centuries' (Poynter, p. 100). This copy was owned by Israel Tonge who served as army chaplain to the garrisons at Dunkirk and Tangiers, and who revealed with Titus Oates the supposed Popish plot against Charles II. Tonge was rewarded with lodgings in Whitehall and a pension suitable to the man 'to whose memory the nation is not a little indebted' (DNB). Poynter 20.7; Wing M-659.

(Soiling and spotting, a few marginal tears.) Contemporary blind-ruled sheep (recased with new endpapers, abrasion mark on upper cover).
