2 parts in one volume, 2° (300 x 176mm). Engraved portrait, additional engraved titles and 6 folding plates, one small woodcut in the text. (Occasional light browning and spotting, both additional engraved titles misbound.) Contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt spine (hinges a little rubbed). Provenance: Earl of Minto (library label).

A reissue with cancel title-page of The Parfait Mareschal or Compleat Farrier published in Edinburgh the same year, adapted from the eighth French edition -- the first appeared in 1664. After studying at Lyon, the author, the celebrated Master of Horse, came to Paris where he learned his trade in the most celebrated riding schools of the day. In about 1645 he accompanied the comte d'Avaux to Germany on a diplomatic mission, profiting by his time there to master all that German veterinary science and equitation had to offer. On his return to France he opened his own riding school and assisted his favourite pupil, Bernardi, in founding another while, at the same time, entering royal service. Solleysel was also a musician and artist, and was probably responsible for the engraved plates which adorn his work. Wing S-4457.
