2° (361 x 225mm). Engraved portrait of the author by and after R. White and 49 engraved plates, with the initial blank. (Title very lightly soiled, minor flaw in A3 slightly affecting two words). Contemporary speckled calf, gilt spine (rubbed, spine rather worn, one endpaper becoming loose). Provenance: Thomas Trevor, 2nd Baron, 1738 (c. 1692-1753, engraved armorial bookplate).

FIRST EDITION and a wide-margined copy of the first book of its kind to be published in England, but essentially a copy of Carlo Ruini's Dell'anatomia, et dell'infirmità del cauallo, Bologna, 1598. In the dedicatory epistle to Charles II, Snape informs us that his family had been farriers to the Crown for 'these two Hundred Years'.
