40 volumes, 8° (228 x 144mm). Engraved titles, 1399 plates only (of 1491; the majority of lacunae are in the needlepoint patterns), some folding, including hand-coloured aquatints, fashion-plates, furniture designs, allegorical woodcut plates with mounted silk, cotton and lace fabric samples, uncoloured or colour-printed plates of designs for bank-notes and playing-cards, portraits, etc. (Vol.XIV lacking the general index to the 1st series and the supplemental pp.373-479, a few plates just shaved, a few cloth samples lacking, occasional soiling, offsetting, or browning.) 20th-century red half morocco, spines and sides gilt ruled, spines gilt-lettered, blue calf gilt, top edge gilt. A RARE SET INCLUDING ALL THREE SERIES: series 1 vols.I-XIV; series 2 vols.I-XIV; series 3 vols.I-XII. The costume plates run throughout all three series forming a beautiful and valuable record of the costume of the period. Other series were later reprinted as separate works: Papworth Select Views of London (1815); Papworth Rural Residences (1818); Schoberl Picturesque tour from Geneva to Milan (1820); Combe Journal of sentimental travels in the southern provinces of France (1821) and Ackermann's Views of Country Seats (1830).
