ALKEN, Henry (1784-1851). llustrations to Popular Songs. London: Thomas McLean, 1823 [plates watermarked 1821-23]. Oblong 4° (252 x 350mm). Hand-coloured engraved title and 42 plates, extra illustrated with 3 pencil drawings, tipped-in. (Marginal soiling and occasional spotting, drawings lightly sunned evidently from earlier framing.) Contemporary red half morocco, gilt-lettered label on upper cover (lightly rubbed, foot of spine worn).
Second edition, WITH ORIGINAL DRAWINGS FOR THREE OF THE PLATES: 'No joys can delight like the sports of the field...', 'Ye Gentlemen of England that live at home at ease...' and 'In sportive mood the fickle god in various shapes to tempt us tries...'. These appear to be transfer drawings used in preparing the plates for printing: on one side they are in pencil, while on the other side two of these have picked-up ink from the plates against which they were drawn. The drawings vary slightly from the published version; these may have been reworked on the plate, or the present drawings may represent a variant state. Mellon/Podeschi 118; Cf. Tooley 37 (1822 edition).
