A DETAILED JOURNAL OF ACTIVITIES OF ONE OF THE PREMIER HUNTS. Lord Forester notes, in a resumé of the season's activities, that 109 foxes were killed between 25 November 1843 and 6 April 1844: 'An extraordinary season for sport -- besides many good days -- 23 real first rate days sport. Frost 22 days from Nov 20 to Ap 10'. Schwerdt notes that Lord Forester (nephew of the 4th Duke of Rutland) was master of the Belvoir from 1829 to 1856: this was the only period from the foundation of the hunt in 1750 to 1896 when the mastership was not held by the reigning Duke of Rutland. Welby, in his Memoirs of the Belvoir Hounds, 1867, states that during Lord Forester's mastership a daily journal was kept, of which the present volumes contain a part. (2)
