ROWLANDSON, Thomas (1756-1827). Miseries of Human Life. London: R. Ackermann, 1808 [11 plates watermarked 1809 and one 1810].

Oblong 4° (198 x 245mm). Hand-coloured etched title and 50 hand-coloured etched plates after Rowlandson, 3 after Bunbury. (Plate of 'The Inflexible Porter' torn and crudely repaired, another plate rather stained, some other plates lightly stained and spotted.) Early 19th-century maroon half roan (rubbed, spine faded). Provenance: book-label with monogram CP obscuring another book-label.

As usual with the plate of the Chiropodist replacing 'Pall Mall'. The plate of 'Miseries of Social Life. 7 Dialogue' (Abbey's plate no.9) has been replaced with a plate entitled 'The Enraged Vicar', signed Rowlandson 1805, two lines of letterpress. This plate presumably belongs to another work. Abbey's plate no.48 in this copy has a variant reading of 'Symptons'.
