(Plates discoloured and mostly with text offset on to them, a few light spots and stains.) Original green pictorial cloth gilt (slightly rubbed), green cloth slipcase. Provenance: Alfred Rush (bookplate). THE RARE FIRST EDITION of Surtees' first humorous novel introducing John Jorrocks. It first appeared in serialised form in The New Sporting Magazine (see lot 726). Schwerdt II, p.235 (his copy containing only 3 advertisement leaves at end).

Additional hand-coloured aquatint title and 14 hand-coloured aquatint plates after Henry Alken, 4 advertisement leaves at end. (A few light spots and stains.) Original green pictorial cloth gilt (spine and joints slightly rubbed, upper inner hinge weak), green folding cloth box. Provenance: Joseph Hall (armorial bookplate). Second edition, but the first to contain Alken's fine illustrations. Schwerdt II, p.236; together with the suppressed plate, a hand-coloured portrait of Jorrocks, drawn and etched by H. Alken of which Schwerdt says 'This portrait of the celebrated Mr. Jorrocks, for some reason we have been unable to elucidate, was withdrawn from publication and is rarely met with'. 222 x 141mm.
