Lot Essay

The overall form of this wine-cooler relates to a design by Robert Adam for Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn (The Adam Drawings, Sir John Soane Museum, vol. 25, no. 118, illustrated Christie's furniture catalogue, 16 November 1989, lot 96).
A very similar wine-cooler, on cylindrical feet, is visible in the Dining-Room of no. 8 Ely Place, Dublin, photographed for the Irish Georgian Society, 1911, vol. II, pl. CI, which leads to the possibility, combined with the provenance, that the present lot is of Irish manufacture.
