HERMITAGE LA CHAPELLE

As the hill of Hermitage crowns the splendid vineyards of the Northern Rhone, the poetry of a little lone chapel cresting this crown gives Jaboulets best Hermitage its moniker. The domaine was a family business from its inception in 1834 until its recent sale to the owner of La Lagune. Equally great as Chave's but differing in style, La Chapelle possesses great elegance, leather and ethereal smoke bordering on incense. Not as heavy or as extracted, spending lesser time in oak, the wines are nonetheless intense. There is no better match with a rack of lamb. The 1961, 1978 and 1990 are all three of the greatest wines of the last century. The choice is simply a matter of preference as to how mature one likes to savor great reds.

Hermitage, La Chapelle--Vintage 1978
Rhône, Jaboulet
Levels: 2 cm or better; lightly bin soiled labels
"Opaque plum/garnet-colored, with a fabulously sweet, youthful bouquet of licorice, incense, smoked meats, pepper, and blackberry/cassis fruit, the full-bodied 1978 La Chapelle is extremely young with astonishing vigor, velvety tannin, and a full-bodied, multi-dimensional, layered personality. The finish lasts for over 60 seconds. Remarkably fresh and not yet fully mature, the super-concentrated 1978 should continue to age well for another three decades." Anticipated maturity: now-2030.
