HERMITAGE LA CHAPELLE
As the hill of Hermitage crowns the splendid vineyards of the Northern Rhone, the poetry of a little lone chapel cresting this crown gives Jaboulets best Hermitage its moniker. carefully tended Rhone wines was a family business from its inception in 1834 until its recent sale purchase this Equally great as Chaves but differing in style, La Chapelles elegance, leather and ethereal smoke bordering on incense. Not as heavy or as extracted, spending lesser time in oak, the wines are intense. There is no better match with a rack of lamb. The 1961, 1978 and 1990 are all three of the greatest wines of the last century. The choice is simply a matter of preference as to how mature one likes to savor great reds.
Hermitage, La Chapelle--Vintage 1961
Rhône, Jaboulet
Levels: one 1.5cm and one 2.5cm; one lightly bin soiled label
"This is unquestionably one of the greatest wines made in the twentieth century. In the two dozen tastings where I have had the 1961 La Chapelle, I rated it 100 points twenty times. The opaque purple/garnet color is accompanied by spectacular aromatics representing the essence of old vine Syrah (smoked meat, pepper, hoisin sauce, and soy).
As the wine sits in the glass, notions of pepper, new saddle leather, grilled meat, and awesome levels of blackberry, plum, and black currant liqueur-like notes emerge. Extremely unctuous, with compelling concentration and purity, this full-bodied, seamless, mouthfilling 1961 is truly immortal. It still possesses a freshness and vigor that defy its nearly forty years of age. It should continue to drink well for two more decades. Prodigious stuff!" Robert Parker Wine Advocate #129 (Jun 2000)
