Lot Essay

These colourful caricature sets are associated with a tradition of carving based in the South German and Austrian area from the 19th century onwards. The pieces all exhibit an individuality, with exaggerated features and expressions, only the rooks remain as simple turrets. For a similar set depicting Village Folk see Victor Keats, The Illustrated Guide to World Chess Sets, Batsford ltd, 1985, figures 96 & 97.
