According to Gareth Williams Mongolian sets vary, responding to regional differences and customs. For example sets from the North West Mongolia region of Tuva, often carved in stone, depict rooks as carts and later as automobiles, and pawns as mythical lions. Apparently prior to the Second World War, the traditional playing board in this region was plain and uncheckered, after further contact with the West and Russian influence the conventional playing board was adopted.
