Lot Essay

This print was previously thought to have been one half of a larger plate, the other half of which was Canal with a Boat and a Bridge (B. 236). However, although the motifs are similar they do not join and the perspective differs in each print. The undeniably close relationship between the two in terms of size and subject means that they may well have been companion pieces.
