A PAIR OF GREEK GOLD AND GARNET EARRINGS
HELLENISTIC PERIOD, CIRCA 3RD-2ND CENTURY B.C.
Each in the form of a dove seated on a Corinthian column capital, the capital constructed of acanthus leaves with scrolls at each corner, the dove with wings, back and tail delineated with rope-wire filigree, a tear-drop setting at the centre of each wing containing garnet inlay, wearing a harness consisting of crossed breast-straps terminating in circular terminals, at the centre of each a round setting with garnet inlay and four small rosettes worn on the breast in each of the segments formed by the harness, an attachment loop at top of head and tail feathers threaded with large ear hoop, one with cleaned surface
