PETROVICH KRASHENINNIKOV, Stepan (1713-1755). Histoire et description du Kamtchatka, translated by Jean-Baptiste Chappe d'Auteroche. Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey, 1770. 2 volumes, 8°. Half titles, engraved title vignettes. 2 engraved folding maps [forming one large map] by P. Mol after Chappe d'Auteroche and 7 engraved plates by T. Koning, B. de Bakker, and P.J. van der Schley, 2 folding. Retaining instructions to the binder and final blank leaves II/2H7-8 (some light spotting and marking, short tear touching text on I/C1 and 7, corner of II/M2 torn off and skilfully re-attached, one folding plate and both maps with short tears). Contemporary glazed boards, manuscript paper lettering-pieces on spines, uncut (rubbed, extremities a little worn with slight losses), modern cloth box.
THIRD AND BEST FRENCH EDITION AND THE FIRST SEPARATE EDITION OF THE FIRST UNABRIDGED TRANSLATION. James Grieves's abridged English translation of Krasheninnikov's Opisanie zemli Kamchatki (St Petersburg, 1755) was published in 1764 (see lot 373) and subsequently translated into German (1766) and French (1767; reprinted 1768). However, for this edition the astronomer and traveller Jean-Baptiste Chappe d'Auteroche (1728-1769) returned to the original Russian text (described by Lada-Mocarski as 'very rare'), to produce the most accurate translation of the work, which was considered by Lada-Mocarski to be 'the best of the three [French editions]'. The translation was first published in Chappe d'Auteroche's Voyage en Sibérie (Paris, 1768), and then re-issued as a separate work in the present edition. According to the publisher's preface, the translation was made in St Petersburg, where the translator consulted Gerhard Friedrich Müller -- supervisor of both Krasheninnikov and Steller on Bering's second expedition -- who assisted with the translation and clarified certain obscure points (cf.
