19th Century
Decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e, takamiki-e and inlaid with mother-of-pearl on a black lacquer ground with ho-o among large peony blooms and above crested waves, the box with a separate tray divided in smaller compartments, the hinged writing slope opening to three drawers at the back, the interior of the lid with hinged plaques to hold paper and documents, all below a shaped folding pediment decorated with a bird of prey and songbirds, engraved copper kanagu, some losses and wear
