A RARE TURKISH MATCHLOCK GUN
17th Century
With three-stage russet barrel cut with spiral fluting behind the chiselled flared muzzle, three very narrow raised ribs over the median between a pair of chiselled gold-inlaid girdles, gold-lined barrelsmith's stamp (rubbed), inlaid with a gold arabesque design on the breech, standing back-sight, and retained by a single pierced engraved band (inlaid decoration rubbed, further bands missing), wooden full stock profusely inlaid with an interlaced pattern of copper pellets and geometric roundels of horn and brass all set between cabled copper wire lines, encased in engraved panels of gilt-brass sheet behind the breech and about the grip, faceted butt veneered in panels of bone studded with minute nails and enriched with strips of embossed gilt-brass inset with coral beads, the rear section partly of ivory inlaid en suite with the stock, and with brass pan, sleeve for a pricker, and iron ramrod (the butt refurbished, in the 18th or 19th Century, fore-end extensively chipped on one side, small pieces of inlay missing).
