A FINE PAIR OF FRENCH FLINTLOCK DE LUXE PISTOLS BY BOUTET, DIRECTEUR ARTISTE, MANUFRE À VERSAILLES

Each with swamped octagonal barrel signed in full, the signatures concealed on the lower left-hand side towards the breech, struck with the mark of Daniel Bouyssavy beneath, struck with a series or four maker's stamps within a punched and engraved gilt panel on the breech (Neue Støckel 95, 97 and two others), punched and pricked along the remaining edges of each face, punched with a profusion of small gilt stars on a blued finely matted ground, micro groove rifled bore, bushed gold vent, and fitted with gold fore-sight and back-sight, the breech tangs finely engraved with stylised arrangements of foliage and fruit and numbered 1 & 2, burnished plain lock with fluted bevelled edges, a fan of fluting at the rear, gold-lined pan, roller, one signed 'Boutet Directeur Artiste' and the other 'Manufre à Versailles', figured walnut full stock (one cracked opposite the lock, the other with small repair at the muzzle), chequered butt, full mounts of burnished steel, including the pommel-cap and the side-plate each cut with a 'bat's wing' pattern of fluting, spurred trigger-guard with fluted finial en suite with the top jaw and steel, and three baluster ramrod-pipes,and each with set trigger, original ramrod, and much original finish.

Lot Essay

Daniel Bouyssavy held the position of Inspecteur à l'atelier de reparation de Versailles from 1797 to February 1807.

The stocks are stamped on the inside with the letters 'CJ' for Jean Cazamajou, réviseur à Versailles, 1800-1806.
