Lot Essay

A painter and etcher, Rushbury studied stained glass design and mural decoration at Birmingham College of Art between 1903 and 1909, before working as an assistant to Henry Payne, R.W.S. When he moved to London in 1912 he began to specialize in architectural subjects, holding his first solo exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1921. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1936, became Vice-President of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1944 and was knighted in 1964.
