Lot Essay

This picture derives from Reynolds's original, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1782 as 'Children', now in The Iveagh Bequest at Kenwood House. According to the St. James's Chronicle of 30 April 1782, the prime version was painted immediately after Reynolds's return from Flanders in 1781. The Infant Academy title first appeared on Howard's stipple engraving of 1783. The old attribution of the present picture to Hilton seems perfectly plausible.
