A LOUIS XVI GOLD AND GLASS CARNET-DE-BAL SET WITH MINIATURES
Paris, 1783/1784, with the second charge and discharge marks of Henry Clavel 1783-1789, maker's mark partly rubbed with a 'J' as the first of three letters
Slightly tapering rectangular étui-à-tablettes with arched top, of oblong section, all sides of cover and base set with blue glass panels on metal paillons stamped with horizontal reeding and scattered pellets, within borders of frosted gold stamped with pellets, obverse and reverse of the cover applied with pierced gold inscription SOUVENIR D'AMITIE within pierced reeded gold borders with rose cresting and laurel garlands, the obverse of the base centred with an oval glazed miniature painted with a young lady at an altar of love, within a two-colour gold border stamped with pellets, the reverse with a similarly framed miniature of trophies of faithful love, the sides with chain attachments; three-leaved tablets inside
