A SET OF TWELVE GEORGE III SILVER DINNER-PLATES
MARK OF EDWARD FERNELL, LONDON, 1783
Shaped circular and with a gadrooned rim, later engraved with a coat-of-arms, crest and baron's coronet, marked on back, the backs further engraved with inventory numbers from 37-48
9½ in. (24.2 cm.) diam.

The arms are those of Hanmer impaling Chetwynd, for Sir John Hanmer, (1809-1881) and his wife Georgiana (d. 1880), youngest daughter of Sir George Chetwynd, 2nd Bt. (1783-1850), whom he married in 1833. Sir George was MP for Shrewsbury from 1832 until 1837. He was later MP for Hull from 1841 until 1847 and represented the Flint boroughs until 1872 when he was created Baron Hanmer. It would have been at this time that the baron's coronet would have been engraved on these plates. (12)
