YORK, 1670, MARK ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN THOMPSON
Cylindrical and on three pomegranate feet with foliate terminals, with plain flat cover and double pomegranate thumbpiece, the body later engraved with a coat-of-arms within a brick-work baroque cartouche with shell and foliage mantling, marked on base and cover

The arms are those of Talbot impaling Frankland, for Roger Talbot Esq., and Frances, daughter of Sir Thomas Frankland 2nd Bt. (d.1726) and his wife Elizabeth (d.1733), daughter of Sir John Russell 4th Bt. and his wife Elizabeth, youngest daughter of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658)
Roger Talbot was the son of Roger Talbot Esq. (d.1680), an uncompromising loyalist and a captain in the army of Charles I. He was elected M.P. for Northallerton, and was for many years a justice of the peace. His son, Roger and his wife Frances had two children, Roger and Arabella. The son succeeded to the estates on his father's demise, and was elected to parliament by the burgesses of Thirsk in 1754. He married the widow of Sir Robert Fagg, Bart., but had no issue, and died in 1778, when the family died out. The mansion and estate were inherited by his sister, Arabella.
