Lot Essay

The name Hong Wu is likely to refer to Emperor Qianlong's brother who would have supervised the production of this plaque. The composition of the plaque is an extract taken from Imperial handscroll paintings, such as the scroll painting entitled 'Kangxi's Southern Inspection Tour', included in the exhibition, Splendors of a Flourishing Age, Macao Museum of Art, 2000, and illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 8. Similar paintings were also commissioned by Qianlong to record his own Southern Inspection Tours.
