Smiling and standing in half-embrace as if about to begin a minuet, the woman holding a handkerchief in her free hand and with a rose-decorated blue scarf over her head, the man with tricorn hat and green coat over iron-red waistcoat and breeches, his white stockings held fast with toggles and his shoes with gilt buckles, the curls of his long hair carefully delineated in sepia, all supported on an openwork plinth with faux bois decoration

Lot Essay

A very similar figure group from the collection of Mrs. Lammot du Pont Copeland and a promised gift to the Peabody Museum of Salem is illustrated by W.R. Sargent, The Copeland Collection: Chinese and Japanese Ceramic Figures, pp. 220-21, where the author suggests that these figure groups may have been enjoyed by the Chinese as amusing representations of "foreign barbarians"
