A PAIR OF GEORGE III GILTWOOD SOFAS
IN THE MANNER OF JOHN LINNELL, CIRCA 1775
Each with curved beaded top rail centred by a rose garland, with downswept padded arms formed by acanthus leaf scrolls, the serpentine beaded frieze above four fluted baluster legs, the padded seat, back and arms covered in pale blue silk damask decorated with classical motifs, four matching squab cushions, regilt, with pegs at the top of the back legs for protective cover

Lot Essay

A comparable sofa was supplied to Robert Child of Osterley Park, circa 1775, by John Linnell. A set of six giltwood armchairs with similar legs was supplied by the same maker to John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806) for Inveraray Castle, Argyll, circa 1775. (H. Hayward & P.
