A PAIR OF GEORGE III GILTWOOD ARMCHAIRS
CIRCA 1775
Each with oval back centred on the top by a patera, with downswept padded arms, the elbows decorated with acanthus leaves, above a curved frieze, on tapering fluted legs headed by roundels, the padded seat, back and arms covered in pale blue silk damask decorated with classical motifs, regilt, pegged construction, some roundels replaced (2)

Lot Essay

A set of eight very similar giltwood armchairs sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 19 June 1981, lot 97, and a sofa with similar downswept arms and roundel motifs is illustrated in G. Beard and J. Goodison, English Furniture 1500-1840, London 1987, p.223, fig 4. Other related examples include a set of eight chairs sold in 1920 from Saltram, Devon, a house for which Thomas Chippendale supplied furniture during the early 1770's.
