Lot Essay

This sculpture was made at Juby's 'Alpha Engineering Works', Ipswich, in about 1974, for Enzo Apicella, the co-founder of the Meridiana restaurant where it stood for more than a decade on the balcony overlooking the Fulham Road. Its imagery and method of construction is similar to the prefabricated sculpture Paolozzi first began to make in the early 1960s. It was sited, until recently, in 'Pizza on the Park', the 'flagship' Pizza Express restaurant at Hyde Park corner.
