Lot Essay

This torchere is nearly identical to a design for a candlestand published in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director of 1762, pl. CXLIV. An identical torchere, if not the same, is illustrated in R.W.P. Luff, 'The Fret Decoration of Mid-Eighteenth Century Furniture in England', The Antique Collector, June 1973, p. 144, fig. 9.
