T. MOLLO (publisher). Wien's Umgebungen. Vienna: Tranquillo Mollo, [c.1830]. Aquatint title with text in German and French and hand-coloured vignette, and 64 hand-coloured aquatint plates by and after Joseph and Edward Gurk, all mounted on grey/blue card within ruled borders of black and white with grey wash on gouache grounds, the plates with lithographic labels on mounts bearing titles in German and French, and imprints and names of localities.
Oblong 4° (337 x 257mm). (Occasional very light spotting or marking, primarily affecting mounts, mounts of titles and some plates a little discoloured, some mounts slightly bowed or creased.) Loose as issued, contained in 2 contemporary uniform gilt roan boxes, titled in gilt on the spines, fore-edge clasps, blue silk linings (some rubbing and scuffing, linings partially detached and with tears, one box lacking clasp-pins). Provenance: Rudolph Ritter von Gutmann (1880-1966, bookplates; his sale, Sotheby's London, 2 April 1993, lots 68-69).
THE VON GUTMANN SET OF THIS SERIES OF FINE VIEWS OF VIENNA IN THE VERY RARE DE LUXE ISSUE. Although Nebehay and Wagner note a special de luxe issue of the first work, the complementary de luxe issue of the second work is not noted by them; both works comprise an equal number of plates, which is smaller than the number contained in the regular issues (79 and 66 respectively). No other copies of the de luxe issue are recorded at auction by ABPC since 1975 and only one other copy of both works is listed. Cf. Ingo Nebehay and Robert Wagner Bibliographie altösterreichischer Ansichtenwerke aus fünf Jahrhunderten (Graz: 1981-1984), 428-429. (2)
