BRAUN, Georg (1541-1622) and Frans HOGENBERG (fl. c.1540-1590). Contrafactur und Beschreibung von der vorembsten Stretten der Welt [Civitates Orbis Terrarum]. Cologne: T. Graminaeus [I], G. von Kempen [III], Bertram Buchholtz [IV], 1572-90.
3 volumes only (of 6) [Parts I, III, IV], 2° (415 x 290mm). Latin (part I) and German text (parts III and IV). 3 engraved architectural titles, 174 engraved views and town plan only, those of Rome and Jerusalem on 2 sheets, by Frans Hogenberg and Simon Novellanus after Joris Hoefnagel, William Smith and others. (Part I browned and discoloured, title detached, lacking maps of Granada and Heidelberg, several maps cracked or torn with loss, parts III and IV with occasional staining and a few creases, part III with a few leaves affected by adhesive.) Non-uniform contemporary calf, panelled in gilt and blind with central arabesques, the upper lettered, the lower with image of justice (ties slightly damaged, corners bumped and rubbed). Provenance: Johann von Leuhelsing Chorister (contemporary signatures and shelf marks on front paste-downs of vols III and IV).
