The Royal Institution of Great Britain was founded in 1799 in at the home of the President of the Royal Society, Joseph Banks. Each of the 58 original members contributed 50 guineas to begin an institution devoted to scientific research. In 1826, noted scientist Michael Faraday instituted the Friday Evening Discourses at the Royal Institution, the abstracts of which were published in Proceedings beginning in 1851.
