FIRST EDITION. "An eloquently written but historically unreliable account of the nature, organization, work and aims of the recently-founded Royal Society. The work represents the Royal Society's attempt to give itself a genuinely British origin, exaggerating the influence of Francis Bacon and suppressing the importance of contributions from Continental scientists like Haak and Mersenne" (Norman).
