[MEXICO--Treaty.] Primera Secretaria de Estado, Departmento del Exterior...El Escmo. Sr. Presidente de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos...[caption title]. Mexico City, 29 October 1827.
2o (305 x 218 mm). 12 pages, printed in double columns in Spanish and English. Unbound; red calf portfolio.
FIRST EDITION of the first treaty between Mexico and Great Britain, or any European power. Negotiated in London in December of 1826 and ratified in Mexico on Oct. 29, 1827, this provided an early amity and commerce treaty between the two nations and was a significant diplomatic victory for England. At the time, Great Britain faced serious Caribbean trade disputes with the United States, ultimately leading John Quincy Adams to close American ports to British shipping from Caribbean colonies the next year. The U.S. still lacked a treaty with Mexico, and this treaty insinuated British influence against American expansion.
